Short answer
Hotiv Landscaping pressure washes interlock driveways, patios, wooden decks and fences across Markham, Ontario and nearby, with a setup that suits each surface. Pavers get a rotary surface cleaner and wood gets lower pressure and a wide fan tip. Washing is usually the first step: afterwards interlock needs new polymeric sand, and a deck or fence is ready for a waterproof coating or paint. We do both.
Most outdoor surfaces that look worn out are just dirty. A few years of Ontario weather leaves interlock dark and mossy, turns a deck silver-grey and puts green streaks on the shady side of a fence.
We do pressure washing across Markham and nearby. It takes that layer off so you can see what shape the surface is really in.
What do we pressure wash?
We wash the same interlock and wood we maintain and repair:
- Interlock driveways, front walks, steps and backyard patios.
- Wooden decks, including the stairs and railings.
- Wooden fences and privacy screens.
Some people call it power washing. It’s the same job, usually booked for a blotchy driveway, a slippery green patio corner, a deck due for a coating, or a house going up for sale.
How we pressure wash a driveway, deck or fence
- We clear and sweep the area. On interlock, we pull the weeds and grass out of the joints first.
- We set up for the surface (see the table below).
- We go over moss, algae and stains, and tell you before we start which will come out and which will only fade.
- We rinse the dirty water off walls, steps and garden beds.
- The surface dries before anything else goes on it.
Which setup suits which surface?
Interlock, pressure-treated wood and cedar each need their own pressure, tip and drying time.
Scroll sideways to see the whole table.
| Surface | How it gets washed | Before the next step |
|---|---|---|
| Interlock pavers | Rotary surface cleaner, or a fan tip on a low setting at knee height, angled at 45 degrees (Unilock) | Dry pavers and joints, then new polymeric sand |
| Pressure-treated wood | Lower pressure, wide fan tip, along the grain | 24 to 48 hours of drying before a coating (Sherwin-Williams) |
| Cedar | No pressure washer. Warm soapy water and a brush (Western Red Cedar Lumber Association) | Fully dry before any finish |
For driveway pressure washing, a surface cleaner spreads the pressure evenly, so you don’t get wand stripes.
What happens after the washing?
Washing interlock lifts some joint sand, so the job normally ends with new polymeric sand once everything is dry. To protect the pavers as well, interlock cleaning and sealing adds a sealer on top.
A washed deck is ready for a waterproof coating or paint, and a washed fence for fence painting or staining. Coatings grip clean wood far better than dirty, weathered fibres, and our deck staining guide covers timing and product types.
You can see the whole sequence in our projects: an interlock patio washed and re-sanded, a deck washed and coated and a fence washed and repainted.
What affects the price of pressure washing?
Size, dirt and follow-up work set most of the price, so we quote after seeing the job. Steps, railings, borders and tight corners take longer than open, flat surface.
Deep moss and weeds in every joint take far longer than a surface that’s only grey. Oil drips and rust marks need their own treatment, and new joint sand or a coating afterwards is extra work again. Access matters too, including whether there’s water close to where we’re washing.
When is the best time to pressure wash in Ontario?
Spring to early fall is the practical window. Washing only needs a day above freezing, but polymeric sand, paint and coatings need dry weather to set, and wood has to dry first.
We plan the job around the forecast so the washing and the finish aren’t a week apart.
How to keep it clean after washing
- Sweep or blow off interlock and decks every few weeks so dirt and seeds don’t settle.
- Clear wet leaves in the fall. They stain pavers and keep wood damp.
- Trim back shrubs that touch the fence.
- Point downspouts away from pavers so water doesn’t wash out the joints.
Our guide on how to clean interlock covers what’s safe to use at home.
Should you rent a pressure washer or hire someone?
A small patio or a short run of fence is a fair weekend job with a rented machine, as long as you keep the nozzle back and on a fan setting.
A narrow tip marks pavers and raises fuzzy lines on wood that you then have to sand out. Wet polymeric sand left on the surface dries to a white haze on the pavers.
Good to know
Start with the widest fan tip and try it on a corner nobody looks at. If the wood goes fuzzy or the paver face changes colour, back off before you do the rest.
The spray can also hurt you. Consumer Reports reported that pressure washer injuries sent an estimated 6,057 people in the US to the emergency room in 2014.
Our guide to pressure washing decks, fences and interlock without damage goes through the settings for each surface.
Call us for a big driveway, a full deck with stairs, or when washing is the first half of a bigger job. We also do the sanding or coating, so you don’t need a second company for the finish.

Questions about pressure washing
Is pressure washing bad for interlock or wood?
Not when the pressure and nozzle suit the surface. Damage comes from a narrow jet held too close: it etches the face of pavers, blows the sand out of the joints and leaves fuzzy, gouged lines in wood. Unilock's spring care advice for its pavers is a low setting and a fan tip, held at about knee height and angled at 45 degrees so the joint sand stays put. We use a surface cleaner on pavers and a wide fan tip on wood.
What's the difference between pressure washing and power washing?
In everyday use, people mean the same job: cleaning a surface with a high-pressure stream of water. The real difference is hot water versus cold. Alkota, a pressure washer maker, says hot water is especially good on grease and oil, while for dirt, mud and general debris cold water may be all you need. That covers most interlock, decks and fences, so search for whichever name you like.
Do I need to re-sand my interlock after pressure washing?
Usually. Even at a low setting, washing lifts some of the old sand out of the joints. Unilock tells homeowners to angle the wand at 45 degrees on its pavers to avoid dislodging joint sand, which shows how easily it comes loose. On a weedy surface you want the old sand gone anyway. Once the pavers and joints are dry we sweep in polymeric sand and mist it so it sets. Open joints are where weeds and ants move in.
How long should a deck dry before it's painted or coated?
At least a day or two of dry weather. Sherwin-Williams suggests letting a cleaned deck dry for 24 to 48 hours, and in cool, shady or humid weather it takes longer. Coating damp wood is a common reason a new finish peels early, so if the boards aren't dry on the day, the coating waits.
When is pressure washing season in Ontario?
Roughly April to October. You need temperatures comfortably above freezing so the water doesn't turn to ice on steps and paths, and the follow-up work (polymeric sand, paint and coatings) needs dry, mild weather to set. Spring suits most people, after a winter of salt, sand and wet leaves.
How much does pressure washing cost?
It depends on the size of the area, how dirty it is, how many steps, railings and borders it has, whether oil or rust stains need extra work, and whether you want new polymeric sand or a coating afterwards. A grey patio and a mossy driveway with steps are very different jobs, so we price each one after seeing it. Text a few photos to (437) 684-2535 and we'll come out and give you a free quote.
